Even if it is an impossible dream Even if it is a mean greed Is it a sin to wish my dream come true? TANABATA written by Subaru / translated by QP/Diana "Here I am, my little boy." Rezo came home with a bamboo which was longer than his height. It had plenty of green leaves. "What's that?" Zelgadiss, six years old, asked with a puzzled look. Yes, he did, since his great-granfather had went out without telling Zelgadiss where to go, and came back with a big bamboo. "This is for Tanabata." Rezo answered. "... Is that so?" Zelgadiss said, but he still had a puzzled look. Rezo understood the boy's lack of understanding, and began to explain. "Tanabata is an old story of a foreign nation. Its story goes as this... A long long time ago, there was a girl descended from the heaven to the earth, and she met a boy there. He took her heavenly robe, preventing her from going back home. Having nothing else to do, the girl from the heaven obeyed the boy of the earth, and soon, they began to love each other. To their regrets, the God didn't allow them. It's natual, isn't it?" "No, it isn't. How can the god break a romance of others? She isn't the god's girl, is she?" Oh, this boy knows something, although he doesn't know other things... "Because the god is selfish," Rezo answered and continued to talk. "The boy of the earth and the god of the heaven had a game. The god won, and the boy lost. Then, the god created a river of stars in the heaven between the girl and the boy. Standing on each sides of the river, the lovers can't meet together. However, they can cross the river only once in one year. Tonight is the night, Tanabata. And people say that if we write our wishes on the colored papers and hang them from the bamboo leaves, our wishes will come true." "Oh, good story..." Zelgadiss nodded with a docile look, revealing that he had a wish in his heart. At that time, Rezo had bound the bamboo to a post in the yard, and he decorated it with chains of colored papers. "The night sky of Tanabata is beautiful... I can't see it but I can tell you so." The last part of Rezo's words was so low that Zelgadiss couldn't listen to him. "... Then," Suddenly, Rezo turned back to Zelgadiss. The Red Preist had a mysterious smile. Too mysterious smile. "If the coulds cover the sky, the lovers can't cross the river." Rezo said. "We can't see the night sky of Tanabata, and it's impossible for our wishes to come true." Zelgadiss looked up the sky and he found that the sky was so cloudy as to rain soon. Suddenly, the boy understood the meaning of Rezo's mysterious smile. "So... your wish will never come true." Finding out to be teased, Zelgadiss clenched his fists rightly. Rezo had a unnatural deep sign and said. "I'm sorry." "You, no good!" Zel cried out and ran into the house. "..." Rezo sighed a little sign this time, and he turned up his face to the sky. Yet, his eyes couldn't see anything. "... Maybe, it was too much for him." He talked to himself. "You are no good, Rezo! I don't want to talk with you anymore!" Zelgadiss didn't open the door of his bedroom when Rezo came to call him for supper. He was already in his bed. Rezo stood outside of the door of Zelgadiss' bedroom, and the Red Priest was almost weaping. However, he knew that it wasn't suit for an adult. He pressed tears and then he listened Zelgadiss' talking himself. Rezo ate his supper alone, and washed dishes by himself. Back in the dining room, there was a bowl of cone soup, a cup of cocoa, both gotten cold, and a hunk of bread with wallnuts. Rezo covered them with a thin cloth. In Rezo's head, Zelgadiss' word echoed again and again. "I wanted to see the lovers' meeting again in the sky... I wanted to see the beautiful sky filled with stars, too... Why can't the lovers be happy? I feel sad..." "I feel sad... I feel sad..." Rezo's wound in his heart ached a little. Sometimes, kids are too sharp. They seem not to know anything, but they sometimes see through everything... Zelgadiss is just like the sky filled with stars. The stalit sky is so pure and innocent, but it can be covered by thick cloud so easily. "Well, for Zelgadiss..." Rezo muttered. "the sky filled with stars is more suitable than the dark cloudy sky." The wind of night was a little bit cold. The air was slightly dry. Very good. Rezo stepped on the grass which also was slightly dry, and then he stood still to listen to the stirring leaves of trees. Then he hit the earth with the end of his staff, and suddenly the air changed. The red cloak was flapped by the wind and danced in the air. But, the cloak stopped to dance soon, then it began to be flapped by the wind of his magical power. You, who are darker than twilight You, who are more crimson than flowing blood You, who are buried in passing time In your name, the Great One I pledge myself to darkness That to those fools stand in our way You and I together will give ruin and no one can escape from us The red light gathered between two hands of Rezo, which he held up over his head. Glittering, the light became goldish red. Soon, the red light became a hot ball of power, making the wind blow, and all the things around him seemed to be red. Rezo turned his face up to the sky. His staff made a clear noise, and then he shouted. "Dragon Slave!" "Wowooooo?" When Rezo shouted, a strong shock occured and Zelgadiss jumped. He fell from his bed. Ouch! Then teddy bear and other stuffed toy animals came down on him from the shelf. Zelgadiss didn't hurt so much by the toy animals, but he felt miserable as bad as he could. Oh, today is the worst day in my life... "It hurts... Wow? What?!" Looking outside of the window, Zelgadiss gave a cry of surprise. Then he realized that his great-grandfather did it for him. The night sky was filled with stars. Rezo could feel that his Dragon Slave had blown away the clouds in the sky. The shockwave might spread around, but I don't care. Only my goal is important, and I attained it. Yeah! "Rezooooo!" Zelgadiss ran out to the yard to his great-grandfather. Rezo was a little bit late, but too late to realize Zel's running to him, and Zel threw his arms around Rezo's knees. It was more than a hug but a tackle from Rezo's back. The Red Priest fell down one the ground on his stomach. Zel got a high point by his attack. Shame on you, Zelgadiss. "Tee-hee-hee." Zel laughed delightedly. Rezo woke up and sat on the ground. His nose was aching, and Rezo rubbed it, turning around to the little boy. This time, Zelgadiss threw himself into Rezo's arms. "Clear! Yeah!" Zelgadiss said in a delighted tone. However, Rezo was troubled. Only he thought at that time was "oh, my shoulder guards are so heavy.". Zelgadiss didn't know Rezo's confusion, and the little boy pressed his face against Rezo's breast. The pressure and warm feeling made Rezo realize the situation gradually. "I love you, my great-grandpa." Everything starts from alpha and will go back to omega. Rezo fell silent since his mind hadn't recovered yet. "Tee-hee-hee." Zelgadiss laughed again, and Rezo said in his mind, "oh, Zelgadiss is so warm..." --- Rezo, can you tell me what was your wish? --- Oh, it's a secret. --- Then, my wish is a secret, too. But I feel that a part of it has come true. --- Surprise! I feel just like you right now. They sat side by side and looked up the sky full of stars. They did as long as they liked for a long time. Strictly speaking, The legend of Tanabata in this fanfic is a little bit different from the actual legends. There are many patterns, however, there is no legend in which the boy of the earth and the god of the heaven did a game for the girl of the heaven. The god only took the girl away to the heaven from the earth, and the boy followed the girl and he went up to the sky. But he couldn't cross the Milkyway and he stood there for a long time, longing for his lover. The god was moved by their pure love and allowed them to meet only once in one year. |
